“THE BIG 5” FUNDAMENTALS!

CLINIC OUTLINE:
Jeff continues to reinforce that fundamentals are the essential building blocks, or “roots”, of music.

“Without roots the tree doesn’t grow. The topics I cover are essential to the continued growth of all musicians at all levels. These fundamentals are literally the ‘tools for your narrative.’ - JC

A solo or group performance by Jeff starts things off and what follows is a thoughtful, open, candid back and forth discussion with the students about what they heard…eventually re-connecting everything back to fundamentals that Coffin considers to be the most essential for students. Student participation is kindly required.

“THE BIG 5”

1. LISTENING
2. TONE / DYNAMICS
3. RHYTHM / TIME
4. ARTICULATION
5. HARMONY

Jeff discusses the fundamental elements of music in a way that is interesting, entertaining, honest, and thought provoking. He musically demonstrates his answers to many of the questions asked to help make this an interactive, creative, unique, and inspiring approach to learning. This is education that will last far beyond the time your students spend with Jeff in the classroom or concert hall!

"When Jeff Coffin talks about music it comes from the heart as well as from a wealth of varied experiences in and out of music. He has an informative, yet organic approach to working with students, where the most important thing of all takes place: They come away inspired and eager to continue their search. Jeff is one of us triple threats. He plays great, writes great, and knows how to teach someone how to teach themselves. AND he is a great guy to boot!"
- Bob Mintzer • Saxophonist, Yellowjackets, Jazz Professor University of Southern California (USC)

“10 SIMPLE TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR IMPROVISATION”

CLINIC OUTLINE:
Jeff will present 10 simple tips for taking your students' improvisation to the next level. This presentation includes tips on articulation, rhythm, voice leading, motivic development, non-traditional concepts, tone, dynamics, and using the fundamentals to achieve greater depth, breadth, and connection to the music.

STUDENT PARTICIPATION - Using the syllabic rhythm of a short, spoken phrase as a vehicle for improvisation, your students will learn how to hear and play musical phrases at a much higher level than before. This will involve call & response, with literal musical conversation and dialogue using the syllables of these spoken word phrases. It’s pretty cool…
